The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified efforts to curb cross-border crime, particularly along the Limpopo River. Recent operations have led to the arrest of suspects, dismantling of smuggling infrastructure, and destruction of 24 inflatable boats used for unauthorized crossings.

These boats, commonly used to ferry people and goods, are reportedly sold in South Africa for between R3,000 to R10,000, depending on their brand and size. The ZRP’s crackdown aims to disrupt smuggling syndicates and reduce the flow of illicit goods and undocumented migrants .

Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, Officer Commanding Beitbridge District, emphasized the police’s commitment to combating cross-border crime, stating that 1,476 people were arrested for smuggling-related offenses last year. The ZRP is working closely with other agencies, including the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, to clamp down on smuggling activities.

The Limpopo River corridor remains a hotspot for cross-border crime, with smugglers exploiting porous sections of the border. The ZRP’s efforts aim to protect Zimbabwe’s economy and prevent the spread of harmful goods.
