Three Zimbabwe Republic Police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Chivhu have appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on charges of armed robbery and extortion. The suspects – Constable Conscious Nhumbwa, Constable Wellington Muchanyerei and Constable Solister Mutande – were arrested after a series of alleged attacks on a local farmer, Learnmore Gwata.

According to state prosecutor Mike Choto, the trio began their spree on 7 January 2025, driving to Gwata’s rural home in Desve Village. Mutande allegedly pointed a pistol at Gwata, accusing him of stealing tiles from Dinson Iron and Steel Company – a claim the State says was fabricated. The officers forced Gwata into their vehicle, demanded US 1 000 and, after he said he only had US 500 at his Northwood residence, handcuffed him and placed him in the boot. He later handed over the money under duress.

In May 2025, the officers allegedly ambushed Gwata again as he arrived home with a fuel‑laden vehicle. After finding diesel in his car, they demanded US 500 to avoid arrest; Gwata paid US 300.

A third incident occurred in August 2025 on the Harare‑Masvingo Highway. The officers stopped Gwata, searched his vehicle, found diesel and demanded cash. After escorting him home, they took US 200, returning US 80 as a “loan” that Gwata later repaid.

The three officers remain in custody pending trial. If convicted, they face lengthy prison terms for armed robbery and extortion.
