Itai Madhongo, one of the Madhongo brothers accused of multiple rape cases, escaped from Harare Central Prison today. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services confirmed the escape, stating that Madhongo was involved in an in-house training course where he was fixing a vehicle, which he used to drive off and escape.
Madhongo, along with his brother Simon, had been remanded in custody since November 2024, facing charges of rape. The brothers allegedly invaded homes and assaulted teenagers in Churu Farm, Glen View, Harare.
The prison authorities have launched a manhunt to recapture Madhongo. This incident raises concerns about prison security and the measures in place to prevent such escapes.
