A shocking incident unfolded at Budiriro Police Station on Tuesday when three men allegedly assaulted a police officer attached to the Victim Friendly Unit (VFU). Constable Blessing Mutoko, 33, sustained injuries, including a lacerated nose and facial swelling, while providing counselling services to a married couple.
The suspects, identified as Charles Jamba, 66, Joseph Jamba, 38, and Tinashe Magumve, 21, were arrested after a bystander intervened and reported the disturbance to ZRP Budiriro. The altercation stemmed from a domestic violence case, and the officer was meeting the female counselee at Dombo Lodge when confronted by her husband and relatives.
Mutoko attempted to flee the scene but was pursued, forcibly removed from a commuter omnibus, and assaulted. The suspects are currently in custody, facing charges related to the assault.
The incident highlights concerns about police safety, even in areas considered secure. Mutoko’s dedication to serving the community came at a personal cost, and authorities are expected to ensure justice is served.
