A bizarre attempt to peddle a hyena nose at Eastlea Shopping Centre turned into a dramatic police showdown on Tuesday. Detectives swooped in and cuffed two suspects – Andrew Makusele from Goromonzi and John Jelester of Kuwadzana – as they tried to find buyers. Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri of the Criminal Investigations Department warned, “Wildlife is part of Zimbabwe’s heritage; protecting it is a collective responsibility.” Both men now face charges under Section 59(2)AC(B) of the Parks and Wildlife General Regulations and Section 128(B) of the Parks and Wildlife Act for unlawful possession of a hyena nose.

Other Wildlife Busts

  • Pangolin Pair – In Mutare last week, CID’s Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit arrested Abraham Chaukura, 50, and his 18‑year‑old son, Abraham Junior, after a tip‑off. The duo couldn’t produce permits for two pangolins and are now charged under the Parks and Wildlife Act.
  • Leopard Skin – Safirio Macben and Mira Nyandoro of Hopley were nabbed in Harare’s Central Business District while allegedly trying to sell leopard skin, adding big‑cat parts to the growing list of illegal wildlife products.
  • Python Skin – Three men – Vesile Ngwenya, 31, Future Moyo, 35, and Mbongeni Sibanda, 39 – were detained in Tsholotsho for unlawful possession of python skin and have already appeared in court.

Authorities say these arrests highlight the scale of Zimbabwe’s illegal wildlife trade. Intelligence‑led enforcement and public cooperation are key, and investigators promise more arrests as the crackdown continues.
